“Oh, that’s my favorite flower!” When I told folks I was working on a piece for Yankee about hydrangeas, I was struck by how many times I heard this. And I kept thinking isn’t it a shrub? Then, I discovered a new terminology, courtesy of master gardener and hydrangea curator Mal Condon at Heritage Gardens: woody ornamental. I just love that. (photo from my garden–proof of blue!)
